Welcome to the NAACP - Nashville Branch. We are pleased to provide another resource about your NAACP local branch. It is our hope that you will find it to be a useful tool for accessing information about our chapter, its history, services, events and activities, as well as, membership information.
The NAACP continues to stand proudly on the foundation of a rich, historic tradition that dates back for more than nine decades. Many battles against racism and social justice have been fought and won. Gone are the marches, lunch counter sit-ins, demonstrations, and the Freedom Rides. Despite the real threat of life-altering repercussions such as denial of jobs, housing, and other services for anyone who participated in the marches, and even the threat of death, the NAACP persevered in the fight for equality and freedom. NAACP remains the preeminent civil rights organization of all times. With the support of the national staff and volunteers; 2200 units covering all 50 states, the District of Columbia , Germany , Italy , Japan , and Korea ; and more than 500,000 members, the new NAACP is stronger than ever. Yet, there is still much work to be done.
Today, as guardians of freedom and equality in an increasingly diverse community—the NAACP's mission is more important than ever. There are many critical tasks before us on a local, national, and global scale that will determine how prepared we are to take advantage of opportunities.
In Nashville alone, the critical need for equality on various fronts run the gamut from education to housing to jobs to politics and finance. We continue to advocate ways to educate and encourage unregistered voters to take advantage of one of our most powerful rights—the right to vote. Some of the others issues that we are actively advocating and monitoring for equity and fairness relate to issues such as education, employment parity, voting rights. We continue our work to alleviate a strategic network of discrimination in the economic, health, and environmental arenas as well.
And this brings us right back to where we began.
Even though, the marches of the 60's are over, the journey
continues. Freedom and equality for all can only be achieved
through a unified effort. We are only as strong as our numbers.
